St. Barnabas School of Chicago won the IIE award for Excellence in Systems Integration at the 2006 Future City competition for their urban city West Destiny.

The award is for the project that best demonstrates the integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. IIE members Charles Hochstein and Russell Wooten served as judges for the award.

    The students, who won the
Chicago regional Future City competition, were Laura Carroll, Eileen Cullina, and Sara Kochanny. The teacher was Jeanne Conway, and the engineer mentor for the project was Timothy Cullina, P.E. The competition is part of National Engineers Week, which was held Feb. 19-25.

    Winner of the 2006
Future City competition was the team from Chippewa Middle School in Shoreview, Minn. for their city of the future, Joukai, which was designed by students Emily Duffield, Alannah Pratt, and Max Showalter. The teacher was Nancy Roussin and the volunteer engineer mentor was Stefan Gantert, P.E. The team won a trip to the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.

In the contest, teams of seventh- and eighth-grade students design and build models of future urban centers using software provided by National Engineers Week. The students are responsible for solving any project problems that arise while creating their future city.

Regional competitions were held in January throughout the country, with 31 regional finalists going to the finals in
    Washington, D.C.
